Orbix has recently joined Enperas and started using the Enperas Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Quadrant Tool to calculate the environmental emissions of its materials - taking another concrete step toward measurable, science-based sustainability.
Closing material - and CO₂ - Loops
Since 1996, Orbix has recovered waste from the steel industry and combined it with natural raw materials to create sustainable, high-value products. In line with the circular economy, Orbix closes both material and CO₂ loops to deliver low-waste solutions for construction and steelmaking—with a clear goal: zero waste.
Supporting innovation for sustainable development: VITO
VITO is an independent Flemish research organization specializing in cleantech and sustainable development. Through its research and innovation ecosystem, VITO helps translate sustainability ambitions into real-world building solutions.
One example is VITO Earth Building — a new flagship in Flanders’ innovation landscape—where Orbix materials are used in the construction of the building. On 23 October 2023, VITO laid the foundation stone for Earth, a state-of-the-art laboratory building forming part of the larger VITO Sustainability Park masterplan in Mol. The new facility will house flexible laboratories and pilot installations developing next-generation sustainable technologies for the domestic and international “factories of tomorrow”.
Enperas team visits Orbix (Genk & Farciennes)
The Enperas team, LCA engineers Maria Victória Luz and An Janssen, together with CEO & Founder Luc Plancke, visited Orbix’s plant in Genk and Farciennes.
Here is what Luc Plancke had to say about the experience:
“As an LCA consultant we often feel ‘small’ during a site visit of our industrial customers. This happened again last week during the onboarding of Orbix, and not just because of the oversized PBM’s. Orbix puts urban mining into practice on their impressive sites located in Genk & Farciennes.
With the help of VITO’s research they are able to process steel slag waste from Aperam and separate different valuable mineral streams to carbonate Carbstone products like Pirouette that adsorbs CO₂. Other streams are used as cement replacers to reduce the impact of classical concrete products. A truly inspiring site, filled with amazing tech that generates the raw materials for our sustainable built environment.
